@jonny I think that's a big part of the central point. It shows us that while Bear (and guys like him) can seem so kind and considerate, any time he had to decide between actually considering Nikki as a person or taking what he wanted, he chose the latter. So that rug pull is absolutely how you're supposed to feel.
